Doors, floors, paws

Last weekend Bang Rahmad collected all the windows and doors, they are really good quality, a lovely colour and heavy!  We had to wait a few days until all the floors could be finished before putting the doors on their hinges.  Now all but one of the standard doors are up and the front doors, where  I’m standing are in place.  The doors for the front bedroom need to be cut so they can be opened as windows and doors.  We still have to a bit careful with our paws to not get splinters until all the wood has been varnished.  More excitment - Yusi found some gas cookers in Medan with ovens so I can make cakes and pizza and roast chicken!

I saw Billy!

When I was in England I saw Billy…and he was dancing!  In fact my Mum and Dad saw him too, he was very cute and a great dancer.  We went for a day out to Billy Elliot - the Musical in London!

Floors without Doors

Filed under: All About Me, My House

Just returned from my holiday in England and checked on house progress.  Most of the Floorboards are down now so I can walk around without holding onto the walls and feeling like I am going to wobble off!  We are waiting for the doors and windows to be finished, Bang Rahmad is going to check them this week.  The wood for the stairs is ready and some of the railing is finished on the terraces.  The trees we planted are all growing fast and some of the fencing has started sprouting already.  How much longer?……Who knows!

Big Chair but not doors

I collected my new chair today, ready to put in my house, if only I had the wood to make the doors and windows!  I also got a nice new green toilet for my bathroom - makes a change from cream or pink.  Anyone got a spare durian tree or two they are willing to cut down for my house?

Roof but no floor

The roof is now 70% complete and should be finished by the end of the weekend.  it looks really nice from inside because they are just attaching the roof leaves using rotan, no nails.  I climbed up into the house so that we could decide where the light switches and electric points will go. Unfortunately, the wood for the floor is proving very difficult - the wood we did have has been sold to someone else, so now we must find more…

Rumbia leaves and trees

Facing supply problems with the wood for the floor and the leaves for the roof.  Today 450 more pieces of rumbia leaves were delivered so only anouth 850 to go!  So today I went with Bang Rahmad to plant the six tree saplings he had got for me.  They are fast growing so will fill in some of the gaps in tree cover around the house and after two years will have seeds which can be used for cooking with.  I also decided on the place for the well so that can start to be dug next week - hope they hit water!

East vs West in Toilets

Filed under: All About Me, My House

Talking with my mate Isabel about progress on my house and the design of the bathroom, I realised that maybe friends and relatives who visit will not appreciate using a squat toilet.  So I searched the web to see if anyone has invented a way of converting a squat toilet to a western style sitting toilet.  I haven’t yet found such a tool, but in my search I did find a stool for converting a western toilet to an squat toilet (see picture) or suggestions to ‘Pile up bricks around your toilet 9make sure they are safe and sturdy)’ and graphic descriptions of why a squat toilet is so much better.  Obviously, I think squat toilets are better because that is what I am putting in my bathroom - but if I want visitors from England should I Sit or squat?
